Sypnosis

Watch as live performance, film and writing collide in this magnetising event drawn from the voices of Singaporean writers.

With spirits and monsters, shadows and visions, fractured states of mind and

displays of fantasy and haunting, this event is a psychedelic and spine-chilling

dose of live-performance-meets-film as three actors interact with a swirl of

characters captured on film.

These vignettes encapsulate the most electrifying and sometimes unnerving

voices in Singaporean contemporary writing, bringing to life a haunting rush of

writing from novels such as Nuraliah Norasid's The Gatekeeper, Lee Jing-Jing's

How We Disappeared, Sharlene Teo's Ponti, Cyril Wong's Let Me Tell You

Something About That Night and O Thiam Chin's Fox Fire Girl.

Glorious, Monstrous, Hantu* Tales from Singapore becomes an eerie polyphonic

sensation from the darker, more monstrous but no less glorious side of Singaporean literature.

*‘Hantu’ is a Malay term that refers to ghosts, especially in Malay folklore and ghost myths.

The work was commissioned by National Arts Council and first presented at Southbank Centre as part of London Literature Festival 2019.

Presented as part of #BuySingLit.

Produced by Cake.
